Scoutmaster's Minute

Mentally Awake

The combination of physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight helps us to be able to accomplish anything in life. It helps us climb the tallest of mountains, face challenges at school and in the workplace, and perform our best. In addition, being prepared on the front-end makes a Scout unstoppable.

I would like us to focus tonight’s minute on mentally awake. What does mentally awake mean to you?

Many times we focus so much on the past and future. While it is important to learn from the past, and prepare for the future, it is just as important, if not more so, to be mentally awake in the present moment in front of us today. This helps us to remain alert and respond the most effectively in a moment’s notice. It also helps us to get the most enjoyment out of each day, and have gratitude for all life’s experiences.

Being mentally awake allows us to recognize when we can help hold a door open for someone who has their arms full. It helps us notice when weather seems to be changing and knowing it may be a good idea to take a jacket to the movies. It helps us to recognize when an individual may need first aid and the opportunity for action. It also allows us to make the most out of each day that is given to us.

While you are preparing for finals, remember to stay mentally awake. Being mentally awake will help find time for studying. It will help you recognize when you may need to ask a question to increase your understanding (be it in class or at home). It will help you perform the best on exams. It will help you make the most out of every moment. Remember the importance of remaining mentally awake these last few days of school, and each day going forward to make the most of each day.
