Scouts, let’s talk about one of the finest traditions in Scouting: the cookout. Now, I’m not saying the smell of burgers grilling over an open flame is the best smell in the world… but I’ve never seen anyone cry tears of joy over a salad.
Cookouts bring us together. Sure, someone always forgets the ketchup, and someone else burns at least one marshmallow or hamburger into something that looks like a meteorite, but somehow, that’s what makes it perfect. It’s not about gourmet meals. It’s about laughing when the wind blows out the stove again, or realizing too late that you packed ten hot dog buns… and no hot dogs.
But here’s the thing: behind every great cookout is a Scout, or a parent, or a leader who planned, packed, hauled gear, prepped food, and stood over a smoky fire just to feed the group. So let’s not forget to be grateful. Grateful for the food, yes, but more importantly, for the people who show up, pitch in, and make it happen.
So next time you bite into a slightly-charred-but-still-delicious burger, take a second to say thank you. And maybe… volunteer for dishes. Or at least pretend to.
That’s the spirit of Scouting: service, laughter, and appreciation, even when the potato salad’s a little questionable.
